FG to ensure common grading system in all Nigerian Universities [SEE DETAILS]

The federal government has concluded plans to ensure a uniform system of grading examination results in tertiary institutions across the country.

The move was disclosed by the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius Okojie, who stated that the grading system in all universities will be harmonised. He added that this will help enhance understanding of the grading system of Nigerian Universities internationally.

Addressing a workshop on the review of grading system in Nigerian universities in Abuja on Monday, Okojie said when the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standard (BMAS) documents were reviewed in 2007, the technical implications of allowing individual institutions and disciplines to implement different minimum requirement for students to graduate, were not taken into consideration.

Okojie further explained that the different grading system within the university system has had technical implications on students and will have to be addressed.

The NUC boss explained stated that while some disciplines used the six grade points of 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0 for letter grades of A,B, C, D, E, and F respectively, other disciplines removed the E grade altogether having a system with grade points of 5,4,3,2,0 for letter grades of A, B, C, D, and F respectively. He said these systems have incontrovertibly introduced two systems of grading within the Nigerian University System that have some technical implications on the grading of students.”

Okojie also said that the ongoing workshop will provide an avenue for the NUC and all universities to review the existing grading systems in a bid to arrive at a generally acceptable method of computing CGPA.
