The Season 2 tagline for smash Fox drama “Empire” claims the show is taking things to a more “personal” level, but judging from the show’s newest trailer there’s still plenty of business to take care of as well.
With Empire Entertainment founder and Lyon family patriarch Lucious (Terrence Howard) now incarcerated, his ex-wife Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) and their oldest son Andre (Trai Byers) are teaming up to oust him as CEO.
With Empire Entertainment founder and Lyon family patriarch Lucious (Terrence Howard) now incarcerated, his ex-wife Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) and their oldest son Andre (Trai Byers) are teaming up to oust him as CEO.
“In 24 hours,” Cookie promises Andre in the brand-new teaser, “you’ll have our company.”
Lucious doesn’t take kindly to the news and looks to be enlisting the help of another inmate to keep Empire’s hierarchy intact from the inside.
“He needs to be handled,” Lucious seethes.
And that’s just for starters.
Meanwhile, the sibling rivalry between Lucious and Cookie’s other two sons has reached a boiling point.
“I’m going to bury your album,” Jamal (Jussie Smollett) threatens Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray), but the youngest Lyon has plans of his own.
“I’m gonna be bigger than you’ll ever be,” he says. “Bigger than dad, too.”
The drama is only getting deeper, but Cookie and Lucious still have old wounds to tend to.
“I never stopped loving you,” Lucious tells Cookie when she goes to visit him behind bars. “I tried. It never went away.”
“You always were my ride or die,” he says.
The preview also features a first look at Chris Rock as one of Lucious’ fellow prisoners, and Marisa Tomei as venture capitalist Mimi Whiteman, who vouches for Lucious from the start.
“Lucius Lyon is Empire,” she tells the board. “Without him, the company is nothing.”
