LATEST UPDATE ON ASUP STRIKE: Jonathan Justifies “No Work No Pay” Policy
Speaking about the ongoing strike of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), President Goodluck Jonathan has justified the “no work no pay” policy adopted by his administration.
The policy provides for suspension of salary payment to the teachers during the period they are on strike, Premium Times reports quoting Jonathan, who commented on the situation during the 7th Presidential Media Chat held yesterday in Abuja:
“You go on strike and you still want to be paid. It is not Jonathan that made that law.”
In response, the lecturers said they were not bothered by the law implementation stating: “It is not about money as some have viewed it.”
It would be recalled that ASUP embarked on a nationwide strike last October while COEASU has been on industrial action since December.
Despite numerous meetings held between the strikers and the Federal Government, the consensus has not been reached.
Lecturers accuse the authorities of unwillingness to meet their demands including but not limited to the improvement of infrastructure and working condition.
